Discover the true story behind one of history’s most famous wars
Step inside the atmospheric underground theatre at Bembridge Fort for a fascinating afternoon exploring the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. From the devastating defeat at Isandlwana to the legendary defence of Rorke’s Drift, this immersive talk uncovers the six-month conflict that changed the course of history.
Historian, author and firearms expert Tim Wander brings the campaign to life with an illustrated lecture, examining the battles, military tactics, weaponry and the battlefields as they appear today. Having recently returned from South Africa, Tim offers unique first-hand insight while separating historical fact from Hollywood fiction, revealing where Zulu and Zulu Dawn got it right… and where they didn’t.
The afternoon shows snippets of the classic 1964 film Zulu, starring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker. Widely regarded as one of the greatest war films ever made, the film vividly portrays the heroic defence of Rorke’s Drift, where 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded to its defenders, including seven to soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment – the highest number ever awarded to a single regiment for one action.
You’ll also have the rare opportunity to see an extraordinary collection of original 19th-century firearms used during the campaign, including Enfield muzzle-loading rifles, a Zulu-used Brown Bess conversion, a rare Snider-Enfield and the iconic Martini-Henry rifle. Tim will explain the history of each weapon, and visitors can even handle selected pieces while wearing protective gloves.
This will be a memorable afternoon as you experience this unique lecture in one of the Isle of Wight’s most remarkable heritage venues.
All proceeds support the charitable work of the Bembridge Fort Trust.
Whether you’re a military history enthusiast, a fan of the classic film, or simply curious to discover the real story behind the legend, this promises to be an insightful afternoon.
